Gravel oval considered for heritage list

In 2015, the NSW Cabinet unanimously approved a heritage listing for the Sturt Park site where it has been proposed to build a golf course with a hole in its centre.

However, the government is yet to make a final statement on the application as that process may take years.

The decision to proceed was unanimous in the cabinet, with cabinet secretary Michael Duggan saying the application was supported by all stakeholders – the NSW Government, the NSW and ACT Governments, the City of Sturt and the Sturt Association.

The state government has until the end of April to make the final decision, which could include a recommendation for a heritage listing, which has been an option that was rejected last month by the NSW Council of Trade and Industry.

The current council has recommended a heritage listing for the site.

Newcastle is expected to apply for a heritage listing next month, and then follow that with a decision by state government, if that is approved.

A further state government recommendation for heritage listing is expected in early 2018, although nothing is publicly known about it.

The proposed course is expected to be two kilometres long and includes nine hole variations, including a par 3 at the final hole.

Plans have been put in place for an alternative course at other sites in Sturt, Sydney and other communities, and there may be a similar bid put in place for a proposed golf course at Northcote in northern NSW.
